The Public Relations Officer of the Olokuta Federal Correctional Facility, Babatunde Ogundare has called for hasty reforms of laws and policies that will ensure the swift decongestion of correctional facilities in Nigeria.

Ogundare made this known while speaking on Crest Breakfast Show, where he gave reasons for heavy congestion of correctional facilities in the country as well as ways to achieve its decongestion.

He added that if the administration of criminal justice law is being implemented on a state to state basis, it would amongst several other means aid in the freeing up inmates who in the first place shouldn’t be in the place.

Also speaking, a legal expert, Bayo Solagbade called for a mirroring of global best practices such as attaching tracking devices and community Services as a way of punishing offenders and ensuring decongestion.

A 2021 report shows that Nigeria’s Correctional Centres are Overcrowded by 37% but 7 out of 10 inmates are awaiting trials.
